Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American musician and singer, better recognized under the stage name Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah's performance in the fields of music, film and television has been recognized with a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot as well as Rita Owens, both members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked at Irvington High School. Her father and mother separated after Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah, who was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah can be described as an Arabic word which means "delicate and gentle". Her cousin bestowed it on her when she was eight. Latifah, a 5'10" tall power forward for the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. She performed the hit song"Home" from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah started beatboxing in the women's fresh rap group. Latifah was one of the members of the original version of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was a member of Latifah in the early days, was impressed by her song. The song was released in 1988. Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's first single.
